Other Clubhouses Report Success
As the executive director of the Independence Center, Bob Harvey oversees two clubhouses in Missouri: the West Pine House in St. Louis and the Midland House in University City. Not only are these clubhouses modeled after Fountain House, where Harvey worked in various positions for five years, but also they are a training base for members and staff from other clubhouses located all over the world.
In 1998 the average daily attendance for both clubhouses was 220 members. Of the 600 active members, 200 participated in transitional employment or held permanent jobs. The clubhouses feature housing for 150 members and a computer literacy program.
In Iowa, there is one small clubhouse called the RAINBOW (Responsible Adults Investing and Networking to Optimize Wellness) Center in Des Moines. The center serves 120 different members a month, and the average attendance is 37 a day. Five members are involved in part-time transitional employment, seven work in supported employment positions, and 10 work in independent, full-time positions, according to Director Linda Oleson-King, who added that the program offers social recreation and computer classes.
"The Midwest is very supportive of the clubhouse model," explained Oleson-King, "and we have formed strong alliances with our community and clubhouses in neighboring states."
