Developing Administrative Skills

As mental health agencies continue to go through major changes in organizational structure, it is important for psychiatrists to take a role in administration, either as heads of agencies or medical directors working collaboratively with heads of agencies, say those in public health. The following is a list of resources for psychiatrists who want to gain administrative skills.

APA's Guidelines for Psychiatric Practice in State and Community Psychiatry Systems is available through APA's Office of Quality Improvement and Psychiatric Services by calling Esther Hubbard at (202) 682-6327 or referring to APA's Web site.

This compendium includes Guidelines for Psychiatric Practice in Public Sector Psychiatric Inpatient Facilities, Guidelines for Psychiatric Practice in Community Mental Health Centers, Model Job Description for a Medical/Clinical Director in the Office of the State Mental Health Program Director, and Recommendations for Psychiatric Leadership in Organized Delivery Systems for Treatment of Psychiatric, Including Substance Related, Disorders.

APA's Office of Education provides certification in administrative psychiatry for candidates who demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, concepts, and developments relevant to the administration of psychiatric programs and facilities. Candidates must pass a two-part (written and oral) examination that tests their knowledge and ability to apply it to problems and issues encountered by psychiatric administrators. For more information, contact Donna Stuckey in the Office of Education at (202) 682-6109.

Psychiatrists interested in receiving training in administration can get information from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in Tampa, Fla. ACPE provides courses and certification and information on other institutions that provide training for physicians. The address of ACPE's Web site is www.acpe.org.
