The present health care system would seem to make solo practice next to impossible. Not in my case. I started a solo practice about a year and a half ago and have managed to build a decent practice without managed care. The reason? I am providing specialized services that appeal to more and more people, as they get fed up with managed care and begin looking elsewhere. More people are willing to pay out of pocket to see someone who will spend time with them and provide them with the services they want. Many of my patients are those who left HMO's. I provide some medication management, lots of psychotherapy, and holistic treatments including herbs and nutrition, hypnotherapy, and energy work. Many people are seeking holistic treatment, which treats the whole person, and they appreciate this multidimensional approach. If any of you are willing to consider branching out into holistic treatment, you will be able to find a niche and practice without the constraints of managed care.
