Smoke-Free Facilities

The Mental Health Resource Center of Jacksonville, Fla., operates the Crisis Stabilization Unit, and though it is a smoke-free facility, the CSU patients are allowed smoke breaks in a designated area.

Many staff members are opposed to eliminating such breaks, alleging smoking helps the patients remain calmer.

We would appreciate receiving information from other crisis units if they have experience in dealing with this problem. (Send responses care of Psychiatric News.)
