Highlights of NAMI Guide

NAMI released its Consumer and Family Guide to Schizophrenia Treatment last month to improve awareness of the most effective treatments. The following recommendations are explained further in the guide.

1. The appropriate and careful use of antipsychotic medication is essential for the treatment of patients with schizophrenia.



2. Other medical interventions such as antidepressant medications can help.



3. The right kind of psychotherapy, together with medication, can help patients to better understand and manage schizophrenia and help reduce their symptoms.



4. Vocational rehabilitation is essential for the best possible recovery.



5. Programs for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT), which provide direct treatment and support to people with schizophrenia where they live, is essential for individuals who suffer repeated relapse and hospitalization and have trouble complying with treatment.
