There seems to be much debate recently about whether psychiatrists should give up providing psychotherapy to our patients because managed care will not "let" us do so. Other professionals are said to be able to provide it at less cost. Are not the proponents of such an abdication of our professional responsibility aware that managed care also wants psychopharmacology to be provided by less expensive family practitioners-or even by nurse practitioners? Are they prepared to give up this aspect of our specialty as well?
