Bernard M. Williams, M.D., spoke for me in the January 2 issue in his Viewpoints article, "Sacrificing Patients to Big Business." We are fellows on the same ship. I am also on the verge of giving up my hospital practice as not worth the hassle. It seems sad and premature to me since I just completed my psychiatric residency in 1987. Like Dr. Williams, I plan to provide old-fashioned direct care to my patients without the blessings and burdens of "contracts," and I wonder whether I'll survive financially. Unfortunately, one of the places I'll need to cut overhead is all these membership dues.
