Numerous Annual Meeting Sessions, Social Activities Planned for Residents

APA's members-in-training leaders have planned a number of activities and special events for residents and fellows attending APA's 1998 annual meeting in Toronto May 30 to June 4. Here are some of the highlights. Complete information, including location, will be published in the Psychiatric Residents' Newsletter and available on site at the Toronto Convention Centre.

Sunday, May 31

1 p.m.-3 p.m. Residents Summit: "Resident Well-Being"
APA Area 7 Trustee Michael Myers, M.D., will help facilitate a discussion on issues affecting the well-being of psychiatry residents. The purpose of the summit, which is sponsored by the APA Resident Leadership Group, is to obtain input from residents to help APA develop policy in this area.

Monday, June 1

7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. "Meet the Experts": Sunny Side Up Breakfast
This breakfast meeting is a valuable opportunity to pick the minds of some of the world's finest psychiatrists on career, clinical, research, and other topics in psychiatry. It is sponsored by APA's Committee of Residents and Fellows (CORF).

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Worshop: "Malpractice and Litigation in Psychiatric Residency"
This workshop is sponsored by the New York State Psychiatric Association's Committee of Members-in-Training.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Workshop: "Life After Residency: Making a Career Choice"
This workshop is sponsored by the APA Assembly's Committee of Area Member-in-Training Representatives.

7 p.m.-10 p.m. Reception
Current and potential GRASSMITS members are invited to attend this reception. GRASSMITS is the list serve for APA's members-in-training, allowing them to communicate with one another by e-mail. The reception's location will be available starting May 15 by sending an e-mail message to mitparty@redtop.com.

Tuesday, June 2

9 a.m. -10:30 a.m. Discussion Group: "Mentoring"
Donna Chen, M.D., chair of the APA/Bristol Myers Squibb Fellows, and Carlos Blanco, M.D., chair of the Area Member-in-Training Representatives, will lead a discussion on the effective use of a mentor.

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Workshop: "Access to Patients: Are Residents Being Carved Out?"
This workshop, sponsored by the APA/GlaxoWellcome Fellows, will examine the impact of HCFA changes and managed care restrictions regarding residency psychotherapy education, the psychotherapy types taught, the decline in available outpatients for treatment, and potential solutions.

12:30 p.m.-2 p.m. Luncheon at the Royal York Hotel
Residents are invited to join medical students, training directors, and distinguished leaders in psychiatry at a luncheon sponsored by the APA Committee on Medical Student Education. Seating is limited so plan to arrive early. The luncheon is supported by a grant from Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.

5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Residents' Caucus
Discussion will focus on the AMA/Resident Physicians Section (RPS) activities regarding collective bargaining. The caucus is sponsored by CORF.

Wednesday, June 3

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Workshop: "Being Afraid: When Trainees Fear for Their Safety"
Gary Chaimowitz, M.D., a Canadian expert in trainee violence, will be the discussant. Several members of CORF, the workshop's sponsor, will talk about physical violence, psychological violence, sexual harassment, and litigation.

9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Discussion Group: "The Treatment of Lesbians and Gay Men: Are the Psychiatric Issues Really Different?"
This session will be led by Mark Townsend, M.D., and is for residents only. Attendance is limited to 25 persons.

Thursday, June 4

11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Discussion Group: "Psychotherapy Education"
This session will be led by David Goldberg, M.D., and is for residents only. Attendance is limited to 25 persons.

11a.m.-12:30 p.m. Workshop: "Cross-Cultural Mental Illness: The True Chameleon"
This workshop, sponsored by the APA/CMHS and APA/Zeneca Fellows, will present a forum to explore and discuss cultural beliefs as they relate to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses across cultures in an environment unfamiliar with such beliefs.
