I am writing in response to the article "Washington Terminates Medicaid Managed Care" in the January 16 issue. The article credited this Medicaid program with increasing access to and utilization of needed services in a previously underserved population, disabled persons on SSI. The article then goes on to label the program a failure. What gives?

I believe that the thinking represented in this conclusion is the corruption of our profession by the profit-motivated corporations that have come to dominate health care delivery in the United States. There was a time when providing necessary services to people in need was considered a success. Now our focus has turned to the idea that providing a profit to stockholders is the only valid measure of any venture.

It is time for alarm when this attitude shapes the opinion of the official news organ of our APA.
