Does pharmaceutical support of medical education have any effect on its content?
That's the issue to be examined in the debate at APA's 1998 annual meeting, which is being held May 30 to June 4 in Toronto.
The debate, titled "Resolved: Pharmaceutical Support for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Postgraduate Educational Programs Should Be Encouraged," will be held on Monday, June 1, at 9 a.m.
In this era of budget limitations, the provision of education to students, residents, and practicing psychiatrists has become more difficult to fund. Pharmaceutical companies are providing a larger role in providing educational activities. This debate will focus on the merits, challenges, and pitfalls of pharmaceutical funding.
The affirmative position will be presented by Michael A. Schwartz, M.D., and Paul C. Mohl, M.D.; the negative position will be presented by Mryl R.S. Manley, M.D., and Irwin N. Hassenfeld, M.D. All have had a career focus on education. The moderator will be Peter B. Gruenberg, M.D., chair of APA's Ethics Committee.
