1998 Annual Meeting

These Annual Meeting Sessions Offer Small-Group Interaction

In an effort to shrink the perceived scale of APA's annual meeting and give meeting goers an opportunity to interact directly with senior clinicians and APA leaders, APA's annual meeting features two specialized formats-the discussion groups and a new "master educator clinical consultation" series.

This year's meeting, which is being held in Toronto May 30 to June 4, features 13 discussion groups on a wide variety of topics.

Carol A. Bernstein, M.D., will lead a group discussion on "The Future of Psychiatric Education in the 21st Century." "Legal and Ethical Issues Related to Managed Care" will be discussed in the group led by Richard C.W. Hall, M.D. Edward F. Foulks, M.D., will chair the discussion titled "How to Participate in Mental Health Advocacy Organizations."

Pedro Ruiz, M.D., will lead a group on "Cultural Psychiatry," and Rodrigo Muņoz, M.D., will lead another on "Psychiatry in the Year 2010."

Two of the discussion groups will be for residents only: "The Treatment of Lesbians and Gay Men: Are the Psychiatric Issues Really Different?" by Mark H. Townsend, M.D., and "Psychotherapy Education" by David A. Goldberg, M.D.

Discussion groups will meet Monday, June 1, through Thursday, June 4, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the mezzanine level of the Royal York Hotel.

This will be the second year for the master educator series. This format is intended to allow participants to present clinical material to senior academic clinicians for their input and suggestions. Each session will have a particular focus with topics ranging from affective disorders to chronic pain and substance abuse.

The list of "masters" includes Ellen Leibenluft, John G. Gunderson, Eugene V. Beresin, Sheldon I. Miller, Joel Yager, and Marvin I. Herz (all M.D.'s), to name only a few. These sessions will also be held at the Royal York at the same times as noted above.

The attendance at discussion groups and master educator sessions is limited to 25 participants, so meeting goers are advised to arrive early.
