1998 Annual Meeting

Learn About Latest Advances in Research

The Advances in Research session continues to be one of the most popular sessions at APA's annual meeting, which is being held this year in Toronto May 30 to June 4. This session provides attendees with an overview of the most important recent research contributions to psychiatric practice, according to Daniel K. Winstead, M.D., chair of APA's Scientific Program Committee and cochair of the session.

As in previous years, the session will be cochaired by Herbert Pardes, M.D., dean of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and an acknowledged advocate for the commitment of essential resources for psychiatric research. He is a former APA president and former director of the National Institute of Mental Health.

The Advances in Research session will help kick off the annual meeting's new research portion of the scientific program. It will be held Monday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m. in the Toronto Convention Centre.

The speakers and topics this year include Alan Leshner, Ph.D., on substance abuse; Jimmie C.B. Holland, M.D., on the psychiatrist's role in medical illness; Stuart C. Yudofsky, M.D., on advances in neuro-psychiatry; and Harold A. Sackeim, M.D., on the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation in psychiatry. In addition, Winstead will provide an overview of the research-oriented sessions at the annual meeting.
