| APA Auxiliary Events in Toronto |
Whether you are an APA member or the spouse of one, you'll want to plan on attending some or all of the events that the APA Auxiliary is sponsoring at APA's 1998 annual meeting in Toronto. More information on these events, including location, will be available at the Auxiliary's booth and hospitality suite at the Toronto Convention Centre.
The auxiliary is always eager to gain new members who are interested in furthering the work and goals of the organization, including advocacy of the mentally ill and support of APA and the profession of psychiatry. Those interested in joining the auxiliary are welcome to call Anne Balster, membership chair, at (937) 436-0668 or drop by the Auxiliary booth while in Toronto.
9 a.m.-Noon Auxiliary Membership Booth opens.
5 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.. Fund-Raising Reception and Symphony Concert
This is a joint initiative between the auxiliary and the APA Foundation. For more details, see page 14. .
1 p.m.-3 p.m. Annual Business Meeting and Chapter Forum
At the business meeting, auxiliary members will vote on officers for 1998-99, the budget for the new year, and bylaws changes. At the chapter forum, district branch chapters will report on their activities over the past year. All are cordially invited to attend the reception immediately afterward. .
3:15 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Reception
This reception is for APA Auxiliary members and spouses and international psychiatrists' spouses and guests. .
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Workshop: "Love Letters"
"Love Letters" is a tender and often hilarious story told through letters exchanged over a lifetime between two people who grew up together and went their separate ways. They continue to share confidences, love, joy, anger, ambition, and heartaches along the way. It will be presented by Pete Palasota, M.D., and his wife, Venie, a founder and former president of the auxiliary. .
2 p.m.-5 p.m. . Symposium: "Violence and Abuse: Full Circle"
Violence and abuse, particularly of women and children, is being recognized as a far more frequent problem than was once believed possible. The short-term and longer-term effects of violence and abuse are more commonly being recognized by therapists but are still often missed. This presentation will give an overview of current developments and knowledge, as well as ideas for managing and treating victims.
