As APA Membership Committee Chair Bernard Katz, M.D., suspected in the October 3 issue, other departments of psychiatry do pay APA membership dues for their residents. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we have paid membership dues for our residents for as long as anyone can remember. This perk appears to be well received and appreciated by our residents and fulfills part of our mission to strengthen our residents’ identification with APA. We also encourage our residents to be involved in APA at the local level and each year try to send at least one or two of our residents to the APA annual meeting in May.
We would encourage our fellow academic departments to promote residents’ early identification with APA.
