Spending Irony

I have been following the claims by APA leadership to streamline APA so that it can serve its members more efficiently and effectively. Therefore, I was surprised to see the allocation of expenses in the pie chart in the October 3 issue showing that more than 20 percent of APA’s budget goes to "General Administration." More alarming is that this amount is more than twice that for "Patient Relations" and "Education and Research" combined!

Isn’t it ironic that the psychiatric community becomes outraged when a managed care company spends 20 percent of its budget on "administration" and then that is exactly what our organization is doing?

I’m all for a "leaner and meaner" APA. Please start by reallocating several million dollars from "General Administration" to "Patient Relations" and "Education and Research."
