The article in the August 1 issue about enhancing career opportunities by earning an M.B.A. degree prompts me to join the chorus of those who warn that when physicians run HMO’s, they begin to act like business persons, not doctors.
It also brings to mind the wisdom of one of my colleagues, who has his own version of Gresham’s Law: "Bad ethics drives out good." He states that when a person belongs to two professions, the ethics of the profession with the lower standards will prevail. His suggestion: When a physician acquires a law degree or a business degree, the M.D. degree should be taken away.
