The golf tournament held in conjunction with APA’s 1997 annual meeting in San Diego helped raise funds to educate the public in the local community on the efficacy of mental health care.
The tournament, held on May 19, was sponsored by the American Psychiatric Foundation. Joining with the foundation in its fund-raising efforts was the Golfers of the American Psychiatric Association (GAPA).
Torrey Pines in La Jolla was the host club for the 144 golfers who participated. They were on the bus at 5:30 a.m., eager to play at one of the best courses in the country.
The golfers enjoyed a day of camaraderie, food, prizes, and most important great golf. During the awards luncheon, the winners in the various categories were recognized, including Dr. and Mrs. Burton Reifler and Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Barley, the first-place team champions. The second-place team champions were Garry and Aaron Vickar, Seth Tilzer, and Tom Pepper. The Cathy Lambert Trophy was won by Patricia Gage, and the Larry Kolb Trophy was won by Howard Wallach.
The following corporations provided support for the tournament and entered foursomes: Abbott Laboratories, Columbia-Pacific Division, Las Encinas Hospital, Eli Lilly and Company, Glaxo Wellcome Inc., Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc., Janssen Pharmaceutica, MPC Behavioral Health Care of California, Pfizer Inc., and Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. The net proceeds were donated to the Friends of the San Diego Psychiatric Society for public education projects in the greater San Diego community.
Plans are already under way for next year’s tournament in Toronto, where APA’s annual meeting will be held May 30 to June 4. Once again GAPA will join with the American Psychiatric Foundation to raise funds for the local district branch (Ontario) for public education on the efficacy of mental health care.
