Sacks Suggests Term Limits for Assembly

Attending his 36th Assembly meeting, incoming APA President Herbert Sacks, M.D., told the representatives gathered in San Diego that it is time to explore the idea of term limits for the group's members. Sacks emphasized that this major change in the Assembly's operation would open opportunities for more members to participate in formulating APA policy and would increase the body's diversity, introducing a broader range of perspectives and experiences to the deliberations.

Sacks also outlined initiatives in five areas that will form the centerpiece of his presidential year, which began at the close of last month's annual meeting. The first of these is improving communications among APA members and their elected officers. To do this he plans to increase the workload of his colleagues on the Board of Trustees by, for example, having the seven Area trustees visit executive council meetings in every district branch in their Area. He also expects these trustees to hold town meetings for their constituents. All Board members who belong to specialty societies will be asked to attend one meeting of that organization's executive body each year and report back to the APA Board.

The other initiatives Sacks described focus on children's health, both physical and mental; improving the media's knowledge about psychiatry and mental illnesses; exerting more influence over health policy issues; and building connections between APA and American business leaders.
