APA's newly revised campaign guidelines appear on page 27.

William H. Ayres, M.D., of San Mateo, Calif., and Rodrigo A. Munoz, M.D., of San Diego have been nominated for the office of president-elect of APA in the Association's 1997 election. Munoz is one of APA's two vice presidents.

The slate of candidates for the 1997 election was chosen by APA's Nominating Committee and received by the Board of Trustees at its meeting earlier this month in Washington, D.C.

Nominated to compete in the race for vice president are Daniel B. Borenstein, M.D., of Los Angeles and Arthur T. Meyerson, M.D., of Newark, N.J. Borenstein is currently APA's secretary.

The race for secretary is one of two three-way races in the 1997 election. The candidates are Paul S. Appelbaum, M.D., of Newtonville, Mass., Maria T. Lymberis, M.D., of Santa Monica, Calif., and Robert J. McDevitt, M.D., of Cincinnati, Ohio. Lymberis is currently a trustee-at-large, while McDevitt is the Area 4 trustee.

Competing for trustee-at-large are Albert C. Gaw, M.D., of Lexington, Mass., and Marcia K. Goin, M.D., of Los Angeles.

The other three-way race is for the position of member-in-training trustee-elect. The candidates are Diana L. Dell, M.D., of Chapel Hill, N.C., Anand Pandya, M.D., of New York City, and Ralph SaintFort, M.D., of Boston.

Three Areas will be electing trustees in the 1997 election--1, 4, and 7. Candidates were nominated by their respective Area councils, and only members residing in these Areas will be able to cast votes.

Competing for the office of Area 1 trustee are incumbent Gerald H. Flamm, M.D., of New Haven, Conn., and Kathleen M. Mogul, M.D., of Newton, Mass. The candidates for Area 4 trustee are Norman A. Clemens, M.D., of Cleveland, Ohio, and Nada Stotland, M.D., of Chicago. The candidates for Area 7 trustee are Michael F. Myers, M.D., of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Vit U. Patel, M.D., of Honolulu.

APA voting members may file petitions to place additional candidates on the ballot. Petitions must be received at APA headquarters by Friday, November 15. To nominate a candidate by petition, at least 400 signatures of eligible voting members are required, except for the positions of Area trustee and member-in-training trustee-elect, for which 100 signatures each are required.

Petitions for referenda are due October 15. They are required to have the signatures of at least 500 voting members.

Ballots will be mailed to APA voting members on February 5. The deadline for their return to APA is March 10, but ballots will be accepted for counting through March 20.

Questions about the election process should be addressed to Shreekumar S. Vinekar, M.D., chair of APA's Elections Committee, or to staff member Carol Lewis at (202) 682-6063; e-mail: CLewis@psych.org.
