Workshop on Suicide in Special Populations
The APA/CMHS and APA/AstraZeneca Fellows will present the workshop "The Color of Death: Suicide and Its Myths in Special Populations" on Tuesday, May 8, at 9 a.m. in room 273, level 2, Convention Center. The APA/CMHS and APA/AstraZeneca Minority Fellowships program offers minority residents the opportunity to become part of the mainstream of psychiatric leadership while learning about organized psychiatry.
Panelists at the workshop will explore the prevalence of suicide in such populations as young African-American males, gays and lesbians, and immigrants. Suicide is an increasing problem in many minority populations. Though it was previously shown that minorities have a lower rate of suicide than nonminorities, recent studies have shown that the incidence of suicide is rising dramatically in several minority populations. Thus, the myth that minorities are at much lower risk for suicide than non-minorities requires revision.
The panelists are chair Kalaya Okereke, M.D., and presenters Serena Volpp, M.D., Angelica Harrell, M.D., Ada Ifesinachukwu, M.D., and Veronica Williams, M.D.
