Marijuana Treatment Protocols

Here is a brief description of the five new treatment protocols developed and clinically tested by the Cannabis Youth Treatment Experiment:

1. Motivational Enhancement Therapy/Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (MET/CBT5) consists of a five-session treatment (two individual, three group) to motivate the adolescent to change and develop refusal skills; social support for abstinence; and relapse prevention.

2. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy 7 follows MET/CBT5, adding two group sessions focusing on problem solving, dealing with anger and criticism, coping with cravings and relapse, and depression management.

3. The Family Support Network supplements MET/CBT5 with home visits, parental education meetings, and case management.

4. The Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach consists of 14 individual sessions focusing on alternative coping skills and changing the environmental choices the patient makes related to continued substance abuse.

5. Multidimensional Family Therapy consists of 12 weeks of family-focused treatment, including case management.

The five therapies vary in length from six to 14 weeks and include from five to 23 individual, group, and/or family sessions. Theoretical orientation and approach to resource utilization management vary as well. Each therapy was recommended by expert panels and/or reviews of previous treatment research. The therapy manuals will be available late this year at <www.samhsa.gov/csat>.
