AWP Gives Center Stage to Women

The Association of Women Psychiatrists (AWP) sponsors a number of awards recognizing outstanding women in psychiatry or medical school. Here are the names and a brief description of each.

• Alexandra Symonds Award Lecture: This award is given jointly by APA and the Association of Women Psychiatrists to a woman psychiatrist to acknowledge her outstanding contributions and leadership in promoting women’s health and the advancement of women. This year’s recipient was Nada Stotland, M.D., a longtime member and past president of AWP.

• Wyeth-Ayerst Fellowship: This fellowship is presented to outstanding women residents in psychiatry. This year’s recipients are Karla Aurora Blackwood, M.D., of the University of Michigan and Serena Yuan Volpp, M.D., M.P.H., of Columbia University.

• Leah J. Dickstein Award: This award is presented to a woman medical student for outstanding leadership and creativity. This year’s recipient is Tina Sheedy of Brown University School of Medicine.
