Artists at APA Exhibit Display Passions Great and Small

The APA Art Association sponsored a crowd-pleasing exhibit and elected new officers at APA's 2000 annual meeting in Chicago in May.

By William Alvarez, M.D.

The first APA Art Exhibit of the millennium—and the 31st exhibit of the APA Art Association—took place in Chicago May 14 to 17 in conjunction with APA’s 2000 annual meeting.

The exhibit was tenderly assembled by its members, who mustered a wondrous collection of art works. They were diverse, compelling, ranging from embryonic image concepts to small and not-so-small masterpieces of museum quality. I was enthralled by the intensity, spirituality, earthiness, whimsy, and pathos of the majority of entries. The artists provided an intimate glimpse into the soul and spirit of a vast new universe of imagery and the ability to reach beyond arbitrary barriers and understand the human values that abound in these works.

The exhibit was popular and obviously well liked, as evidenced by the many visitors it drew, most of whom cast ballots for their favorite entries. We were honored that Allan Tasman, M.D., then APA president, agreed to present the awards, which were handed out on May 16.

Contiguous to the APA Art Exhibit was an interesting display organized by Chilean psychiatrists titled "Art and Psychopathology." One of the Chilean psychiatrists, Dr. Enrique Jadresic, addressed the compact gathering with an engaging report of the display.

The APA Art Association also elected new officers. I stepped down as president and was replaced by Barbara L. Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D. Wilma Rosen, M.D., continues as secretary and newsletter editor, and the new treasurer is Cathy Tasman. The exhibit coordinator for the 2001 annual meeting is Elisabeth C. Small, M.D.

It is time to be audacious, to let loose in the maze of the unconscious world, and to become a member of the APA Art Association. Membership is open to all members of APA and their significant others (we define "significant others" as spouses or partners, not children or others). Further information is available by writing to Barbara L. Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., President, APA Art Association, Department of Psychiatry and Biological Sciences-ACB, University of Louisville School of Medicine, 550 South Jackson Street, Louisville, Ky. 40202; phone: (502) 852-1939; fax: (502) 852-5098; e-mail: blknn01@gwise.louisville.edu.
