MPS THROWS GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY GALA
The Maryland Psychiatric Society (MPS) celebrated its 50th anniversary at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore in June. Among those in attendance were APA President-elect Richard Harding, M.D., MPS President Lisa Beasley, M.D., MPS Secretary/Treasurer Dina Sokal, M.D., MPS President-elect Robin Weiss, M.D., and APA President Daniel Borenstein, M.D.
Jonas Rappeport, M.D., and Leonard Hertzberg, M.D., chaired the gala committee. Among the award winners recognized at the celebration were Jaevon Williams, who had the winning poster in a contest sponsored by the Maryland Foundation for Psychiatry; Frances Glendening, wife of Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, who received a special advocacy award for her work on suicide, women’s issue, and violence prevention; Benedicto Borja, M.D., who was recognized for recruiting 23 new MPS members; Lex B. Smith, M.D., who received the first annual MPS Lifetime of Service Award; and Benjamin Carson, M.D., who received the MPS Distinguished Service Award.
