Scholarships Go to Residents To Encourage Research Careers
Fifteen psychiatry residents have been selected to participate in a prestigious research fellowship.
The American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education has announced the 2000 recipients of the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education/Janssen Scholars in Research on Severe Mental Illness fellowship.
The two-year fellowship program, directed by Darrel A. Regier, M.D., M.P.H., identifies promising PGY-1, PGY-2, and PGY-3 psychiatry residents with the potential to become leaders in clinical and health services research into severe mental illness. The program also works to encourage these residents to choose careers in clinical and health services research in areas related to schizophrenia, bipolar illness, or other forms of severe mental illness. Scholars receive mentorship throughout the program’s term, as well as $5,000 during the second year of the fellowship, to assist in their research career development (for example, for use in developing a pilot research project, obtaining statistical consultation, or visiting potential research training programs). As part of the program, funding for travel to APA’s annual meeting is provided during both years of the fellowship.
